Everything you need to know about changing your degree preferences

Our change of preference process is an opportunity for you to re-order or add new degrees to the list of programs in your ANU application after you have been made and accepted an offer.

If you’d like to change the order of your preferences, ANU will then reassess your application during the January offer rounds.

Things to remember when changing the order of your preferences

Nominate up to five preferences

List the five degrees you would like to study in order of preference.

Make your first preference number one

Your first preference should be the program you want to study most and your fifth preference should be the one you want to study least.

Keep your early ANU offer in your top five

Keep your early offer program in your preference list so that you can hold on to it while we are considering you for your higher preferences.

Your early offer and our change of preference process

We made your current early offer based on your Year 11 results and the most eligible program on your preference list. If you would like to give the degree program in that offer a lower preference, we will reassess your eligibility for your higher preferences during our January offer rounds.

Your final offer will replace your current early offer and be based on either your Year 11 or Year 12 results (ATAR equivalent) – whichever is higher.

Do I have to change my preference?

If you have received an offer that you do not wish to change, you don't need to do anything.

You should change your preference, though, if the following scenarios apply to you.

REMEMBER: Changing your preferences could affect your scholarship eligibility.

Scenario 1

You have received an early offer for a program that is not your first preference so would like ANU to consider you again for your first preference or higher preferences during the January offer rounds.

In this case, you should adjust your preference list, but keep your current offer on your list. We will reassess your application against your new preference order. If you are eligible for a preference that is higher than your early offer, it will replace your early offer in January.

Scenario 2

You have received an early offer for a program that is not your first preference, but you don’t want ANU to consider your other preferences in January.

In this case, you will need to move your early offer to your first preference to avoid ANU considering you for another preference and potentially making you a new offer in January, which would replace your current one.

How do I change my preference?

Once you have accepted your offer, you can change your preference between 1 October and 4 January 2022.^+

ACT and NSW applicants: Due to COVID-19 delaying your exams you will have another opportunity to change your preference after you have received your ATAR from Thursday 20 January 2022 at 12.01am AEDT to Friday 21 January 2022 at 11.59pm AEDT.

  1. Login to your application
